Sparkleberry Crunch

Sparkle ate ten berries from a bush/tree in our yard. After a call to poison control and a trip to the garden center, we determined they were hawthorn berries. They may or may not make her sick to her stomach, will either make her wired or drowsy, and are not poisonous unless she is allergic to them. I am shaky and upset after my trip to the garden center. Sparkle is unrepentant about eating the berries.

I am reminded of walking down the road with [livejournal.com profile] cadhla in Maryland, around Conterpoint when she casually remarked "the berries by the side of the road here taste like burning!" and I turned, appalled and said "Those are poisonous! How many did you eat?"

Apparently in CA all red berries are safe, and here they're really not. Thankfully no stomach pumping was required.

I'm glad Sparkle is okay.

I'm glad Sparkle is okay - that she is unrepentant is to be expected.

Ah, the joys of children with special issues. I'm glad she's okay.

*hugs* to you for your fright.

I'm happy to hear that the outcome was good.

If you figure out how to keep kids from putting things in their mouths, let me know. :)

Hoo boy! Glad it's come out ok.

How did you know the number?

Wow. Glad she was okay!

Sparkle declared she had ten yummy mangoes, and displayed a handful of berries.

I put on my best "Snow White" voice, and cooed at her, asking "Did you eat any of the berries, sweetie?"

Sparkle said yes. I cooed "How many did you eat?" and she repeated ten.

I barked at her a bit that the berries might be poisonous, and had her lead me to the berry bush in question. She did so, crying out "I didn't do anything!"

"Of course not, sweetie," I cooed again, and making cow eyes at her, she led me to the bush. I broke off the branch, and looked at the greenish-yellow clusters, and called poison control, who sent me to the garden center.

The poison control called back an hour later, and I updated them, and they looked up in their books about hawthorns, too.

I'm telling you, with Sparkle's issues about eating normal foods, it amazes me that she'll eat these bitter, nasty things.

I understand your bemusement with her usual attitude toward "normal" foods. Not related but totally related... I was walking with my ex once and I saw some deadly nightshade and said - "don't ever eat those - they are poisonous"... he grabbed a handful, started munching, noted they really were bitter and said "oh, you weren't kidding...."

The mind boggles.

I've heard you in Snow White mode and recognize how stressed you are when that happens. Hopefully all is still well and a little tummy ache might be instructive but I'd happily settle for just fine.

Yeah, I remember growing up with an Evergreen on the side of the house that, we were taught, from as young as I can remember, had "poison berries". Now I don't know to this day if they really were but that's how we referred to them.

Glad Sparkle is okay!!!

Hawthorn Berry Tea

[identity profile] bigbumble.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
About a year ago, my sister gave me a variety of herbal teas. One of them was "Hawthorn Berries" from Celebration Herbals.

To quote from the tea box,
"Hawthorn is a member of the Rose family rosaceae. It's a small, compact shrub-tree with white bark, hard wood, and sharp thorns, It produces small berries called "haws" which look like tiny apples or rosehips."

Of course, with sisters, you never know for sure.

With a kid her age, the most repentance you could hope for would be repentance about scaring you.

I, too, am glad she's OK.

My older kids know that Snow White mode is one step before mama cracks.
