Band Fitting, Spawn II

So, we went to the band fitting.  The instrument try outs during school led my second son Irish to believe he was going to be a trumpet player, and in fact, he could make musical sounds out of the trumpet, with great effort.

The former band director who started the fit process said my son's mouth was too big to play trumpet well.  (My darling husband says that he won't let my son forget that for YEARS.)  She had him try the trombone, and the large elephant noise that came out made everyone in the room look at us.

Irish tried the saxophone, and was able to get good tone out of it, but his hands were too small to make the keys work.  So, they tried the clarinet, and he liked it a great deal.  I had Irish try the trombone again, and the fitter taught him to sound out high, medium, and low notes by how he shaped his mouth.  She called him "a natural" on the trombone, and my little guy was sold!

Now, I have to contact my friend the former trumpet player and say that no, we don't actually need you to dig out your band instrument for us to borrow, Irish is going to play something else.

As I recall, my oldest nephew took up the sliding trombone because it was the instrument Commander Riker played in ST:TNG.

Make sure he gets an earful of "Fallen Angel" from Divine Intervention. There's a lovely trombone solo in it.

I'll pass the message to said former trumpet player.

Irish's middle cousin out west plays the trombone in the school band. He's also doing pretty well with the electric guitar. Bought a better one with his own money, and is planning to sell the starter guitar.
