Ride 54

Went out past the third road today, for a six mile round trip.

The weather was in the low seventies, but pretty thick with humidity.  The skies had many light clouds hiding the blue, making a bright gray across the fields.  On the way back, a few of the clouds had hints of pink.

There were lots of sparrows and swallows today, swooping about.  The dragonflies were also out in force, but I didn't notice mosquitos or clouds of gnats.  Without sunbeams, they can be hard to see.

There were many Saturday cyclists, too.  They all seem to pass me.  I may have more endurance than I did back in June, but I sure seem to bike slowly compared to the rest of the world that uses this path!  I had vixy's song going through my head:  "No hurries.  No hurries now.  Watch the sky for a moment or two..."  I don't have to get anywhere fast.  It's the trip itself that is the pleasure.

I got to notice, with all of the cyclists, that the various dogs along the way do bark at them as they pass, even if only one or two alerts.  None of them barked at me today at all.  The basset hound, after baying his heart out at a group of teens actually lay down in the grass as I pedaled past, only to howl again at a guy behind me a ways.

I saw a hawk sitting absolutely still on a fence post, looking out across a farmer's field.  He seemed pretty big.  I thought he might be a fake hawk put up by a farmer, but he'd moved to a different post and orientation by the time I rode back.

My hips did that achy thing again today.  I coasted a bit and let my legs dangle, and that seemed to stretch some of the popping out.

Queen Anne's Lace is all along the path.  The first part of the trip has short, huge pure white lacy blooms as large as the palm of my hand.  The blooms at the far end of the trip are taller, and smaller, and all have the red drop of "blood" in the center.  Do those go away when they get bigger, or are they different kinds of Queen Anne's Lace, I wonder?

My daughter found my birthday marked on the calendar, and seemed surprised mommies had birthdays, too.  It is, of course, on the first day of school.  I have a personal notion that one's birthday should be a red letter day to the birthday girl, at least, and thus be a personal day off work.  The first day of school is obviously not a time to skip, though, and I don't get any sympathy at wanting to not work then, because after all, I've just had summer break...

My daughter has also packed a suitcase to go to grandma's.  She can hardly wait for our special trip to grandma's house next week before school starts.  She's actually done pretty well.  All she really needs is underwear, a toothbrush and a hairbrush to be complete.

The ride tuckered me out today.  An extra mile than usual really seems to make a difference.

Queen Anne's Lace has the dark "Queen Anne" in the middle of all the white "lace". There are similar flowers, such as yarrow, that do not have the dark spot in the middle.

I think I may have seen part of one episode of "Car 54 Where Are You?" in my childhood. It was on too late for me to watch regularly.

:-) The dogs don't bark at you because you come every day, so they know you by now.

An extra mile can really tire you out--after all you're doing 120% of your usual effort.

Go you! And may Sparkle enjoy her visit to grandma's.
