Sounds like a great idea.
Ink and its derivatives are usually easier to write with than ballpoint pens (which I avoid to this day). I'm also thinking that 'pick something you enjoy writing with' might be a good motivator, as well as giving him a little more agenda in the process - you can't get out of the 'when to write and how much' aspects, but the rest might turn into a bit more fun.
As a kid, I loved coloured inks. Thanks to multi packs of gel pens (some of which are sparkly) I am still in the 'have to hunt for blue or black' phase of my life, and don't intend to leave it. Ever.
