A friend was hospitalized yesterday, so I decided to stop by for a short visit.  As I did not have cash on hand, I parked three blocks from the hospital and hiked (in 97 degree heat) to the hospital.

Walking in, I had two separate hospital staff try to guide me to maternity.  Evidently, my flushed face, limping walk and ample belly all made them think I was about to spawn.

I assured them that I was only visiting a friend, and was not on my way to maternity today, thus skipping the whole "But I'm not pregnant," awkward conversation.  Twice.

The old lady in the elevator up to see my friend eyed my belly and reached as if to pat it, but was intercepted by a female relative my age, who suddenly shifted between us.  I thought of [livejournal.com profile] hsifyppah , and her new song.

I visited my friend, who is bummed but philosophical regarding his stay.  I kept it short, and did not talk too much for a change.  I didn't want to tire him out too much.

On the way out, another staff attempted to guide me to maternity, actually taking my elbow as I was walking down the hall and made a "wrong" turn.

Conclusion:  Must do Something about my tummy.  Tae Kwon Do is a good start.  Getting back to Wii Fit will be another.  Walking in the heat?  Maybe when it's cooler...

well, that sounds awkward... I'm glad I didn't have to fight that when I went into the urgent care last week!

I bet if I'd've had to go to the ER, they'd have gotten a urine sample, just to be sure...

They did do one of those for me, but they needed the sample for a bunch of other tests, including, oddly enough, the diagnosis of a UTI... :-)

"Assumptions" really do lead to embarrassment, don't they? Thank you for being gracious!

LOL! I really, really *did* look pregnant, so it was an easy mistake to make. It also takes less time to be gracious...and they *were* trying to be helpful!

btw

Wish I could've gone...Hope y'all had fun. My next con is next month at ConFluence, with We're Not Koi.

I'm hoping to not look pregnant by then.

You and me both. One of my friends at work is pregnant with twins. I've been noticing similarities in our body shape lately. *wince*

You get 10 XP points to add to your "gracious and lovely person" stat!

I think, although I can't be sure, that my belly gets me offered seats on the bus. I only take them if I need them, but it's a bit embarrassing, m'self.
