I had a busy, busy school day with students objecting to having to take notes, then Sparkle's parent-teacher conference (she's doing SO well, and I'm SO pleased!), then swimming at the Y with [livejournal.com profile] pondside , then  a dashed supper whilst the DH went to bed to get a couple hours of rest before HIS work, and then off with Sparkle and Irish to the Boy Scout meeting, held at the local police station.

I should have known that after an entire month of CREEP stories, that getting back to the grind of taking notes for writing would be rough at school.  ("But we want you to tell us a STO-RY, Ms. Judi!  PLEEEEEZE?")

Sparkle has successfully achieved 3/4 of her IEP goals for the year in the first nine weeks!  She's doing so well, and the first grade teacher she mainstreams with for specials has been sending Sparkle's teacher the same work packets the other first graders are doing, and Sparkle is completing them quite well.  She also has not been trying to run away, and is more flexible when her schedule shifts.  She's starting to read simple, predictable texts.

I swam 16 laps and one length with Juliana.  The lifeguards said that 32 somethings (laps or lengths?  They forget) were a mile.  So, we either swam a mile if the somethings were laps (there and back) or half a mile if the somethings were lengths.  At any rate, I'm feeling virtuous.  And swimming with J is fun in that we swim at similar rates, with similar styles (breast stroke, side stroke, kick board) that we're able to chat while we swim, which anyone knowing me knows is bonus fun!

Supper was amazingly good right from the cans:  Kroger ravioli, canned zucchini and canned tomatoes.  Wearing buff linen, I was wary of sauce, but managed not to slop.  I was glad, because I have on a nice scarf my MIL gave me, and I'd've hated to ruin it.

On the police station tour, Sparkle was thrilled to sit in the back of a police cruiser.  She was less thrilled when they turned on the sirens and lights.  She staggered around with her hands over her ears and her eyes rolled back into her head.  I'm not actually certain if she was having seizures or was just violently reacting.  It took a bit before she got a grip on herself again.  She grabbed hold of one of the old-fashioned lights by the police station, the ones that look like gas lamps, and walked around and around and around it until things calmed down.  Holding onto the post, and leaning waaaaaay back to look up, she looked so beautiful and graceful.  One of the parents said to me, "At least YOURS stays in one place," as he tried to keep track of the boy scout game of tag.  I'm a bit put out with myself for not having predicted that a visit to the police cars with a group of children would naturally result in the sirens being blared, though.  I wouldn't have inflicted that on Sparkle if I'd only been thinking.

irish joshed about a bit, but always kept a weather eye about for adults, and did not take up more than his fair share of the universe.  irish was excited to see pictures of the D.A.R.E. officer he knew up on the wall.  I thought the dispatch area was quite high-tech.  They had a giant display up, which showed where calls were coming from, and where the nearest officers were.  While we were there, the three dispatchers were suddenly fielding a number of calls, and about 12 neighbors from one area were calling in shots fired.  We were swiftly ushered onto the next part of the tour (just as it was getting interesting!)  I'll have to check out the police blotter in the paper.  I bet someone was firing a cap gun or set off fireworks; it was just as dusk was settling in.
