One of our kitties has interstitial cystitis, in which the mucous inner lining of her bladder is worn away, and the acid urine irritates the interior lining of her bladder. What this means is that she's been peeing blood, and has to be kept in our bathroom until her meds start working to de-stress her, and the other meds re-build that lining.

She is not a happy camper, and wants OUT.  I value her, but do not wish to spend time chasing down all the places she tries to go because she hurts.  The vet says that since her bladder is irritated, she goes frequently so she doesn't have the burn inside of her, and she goes in a new place each time because of the bad associations with pain.  So, she is staying in the bathroom for a few days, where we can wipe up the floor and other surfaces easily.

When I took a bath, she was desperate enough for attention that she jumped on my belly for loves and pets.  (I was more stressed by this than she was.)  Maine Coon aren't as bothered by water as other cats, I think.  Certainly she didn't fuss about her tail being wet.  She tries to get into the lap of anyone using the facilities. She opens the cupboard doors to prove she can, and shuts them with a bang.  I kept looking for who was banging, until she finally showed off while I was brushing my teeth.  Hey, bored cats have to do something.

On the bright side, Sparkle has been making friends with her, as the kitty will allow Sparkle to pay attention to her without waltzing away as usual.  Sparkle is charmed with the purring, and excited.  I'm pleased because the cats have maintained their wariness of her since toddlerhood, and Sparkle has calmed down greatly since then, and is well able to be soft and kind all of the time.

Still, we have to keep the door locked, because Sparkle keeps wanting to let the cat out.  It is a pain to have to get out the house keys to unlock the door when one of five people have to "go."  I feel as though I'm still at work, where the rest rooms are kept locked and students must ask to be let in.

Her sister kitty misses her, but when I let her sister in to the bathroom to say hi, it didn't go over well, and sister kitty hissed and was upset.  I guess she smells a bit sick and different.  I hope all will be well between them once the bathroom issues are solved.

Did your vet happen to mention a product called Feliway? It is synthetic feline chin pheremones in a plug-in air freshener (comes in a spray too, but the plug-in works better) that can greatly reduce the amount of stress, as it is a calming thing for kitties. Might make things heal faster, and would likely reduce the tension between the two when the bathroom door can be finally opened.

*hugs*

She didn't mention it to my DH. I'll ask her about it, thanks!

NP. You can get it OTC in pretty much any pet store.
