Sweet and Salty Chocolate Banana Ice Cream has peanuts in it, and I found out the hard way. My tongue is thick, my throat feels like it does when I have strep, my chest is tight, and I have allergy medicine. I hate this.

Every once in a while, after maybe being exposed to nuts, without issue, I wonder whether I still have allergies to peanuts.  Then something like this happens, and I know that I do.  And this time, it feels worse than just having my tongue get thick.  My throat is closed up a bit, too.

I can still breathe and everything, but I am aware of discomfort, and I spent half an hour freaking.  When I talk, I sound like I have a cold, because my tongue is awkward.

And I am cross, because the packaging pictures emphasized the chocolate and the banana, without showing nuts in the picture.  Yes, I know I ought to check the ingredient list every single time, and I didn't, and here are my natural consequences, right now.  It's just at Jeni's ice cream, they have salty ice creams that have nothing to do with nuts.

And my poor husband, who offered me the taste spoon from his bowl, is upset, too.  It's weird, because I didn't immediately recognize the taste, and only really "got" it because I saw a nutty smear in the ice cream in the bowl.

Sour grapes says the taste wasn't even nummy enough to make this worth it, either.

I always think, "Oh, it isn't that bad. i must be exaggerating." (This is an old, old voice.)

Then someone slips strawberries into the fruit salad and my throat closes up.

Yeah, not exaggerating.

My doctor thinks that I may be allergic to a fungus that is endemic to the American peanut crop, not necessarily the nuts themselves, due to the way I react to them. Either way, they are off the list for me.

I *so* did not like the upped allergic response this time. I recently read on a friend's journal a similar experience, and I find myself flashing to that as a "things get worse over time," as my wanting to minimize the trouble it is ends up not matching reality.

"Yeah, not exaggerating," hits that right on the nose.

It has gotten significantly worse over time, for me.

Thanks for posting this. If you have a food emergency when I'm around, I'll know what *not* to give you.

Yeah. A standard thing to do for diabetics when they go low is orange juice for the fast jerk up into better blood sugars, and peanut butter crackers for a longer stability.

Does not work for me, obviously.

Oh, ick. I'm glad you're okay. Do you carry the instant-dissolve Triaminic strips?

Also, a friend of mine with other life-threatening food allergies says that if you take a dose of cimetidine with your diphenhydramine, it activates the diphenhydramine much, much faster.

Not yet, but boy will I.

So far Benadryl has worked for me, but thanks for this information. I have suddenly developed the need for faster service.
